Different things work for different people. I personally find RtK works for me, and I've made lots of progress both in being able to read kanji and in my Japanese. I'm learning the readings of kanji in context, and it's going well. :/ I'm glad I tried it, but I don't care if other people do other methods, this is the way I'm going with.
Although I really don't see that it matters whether you do electronic flashcards or paper ones. Honestly, it's the same thing either way.

Greetings Henrik. First, I wouldn't say your opinion sucks; I agree that in order to really "get" the kanji you need to be exposed to them in a lot of forms (newspapers, the Internet, etc). However, I don't agree with the use of paper cards or that learning kanji in isolation (before learning the actual readings) is damaging.

Not all methods of learning work for everybody; what personally worked for me was following RTK in conjuction with an SRS until I was able to recognize and write 2000+ kanji. THEN I tackled the readings aspect.

Is not that RTK doesn't work; its just that just by itself it is not enough to actually acheive kanji fluency.

For everyone who thinks Remembering the Kanji sucks, or who like Surreal above think that my opinion sucks, I have created a page where we can battle it out. Remembering the Kanji is Bad - or is It?.

Surreal,

Thanks for your comment. It's nice to see that people take learning kanji (too) seriously and emotionally.

A) The writer clearly is only going from his own learning experience and is superimposing that as THE way to learnThis post starts off with "I wouldn't really call it advice, because it's not like I'm trying to tell you how to do it, but rather me taking some notes on how I was, am, and am planning to improve my kanji skills.". Does that really sound like I'm saying this is THE way to learn?

B) I think Heisig's methods suck because I've wasted more than a year on it and it set me back a lot in my learning progress. Anyway, you're a fellow Japanese student and I respect you for that. I don't care if people use Heisig you know... I just don't like it and I'm not recommending it. There's no need to flame me for that.

Hey dudes reading this! This article is dumb so watch out! Here's why:

A) The writer clearly is only going from his own learning experience and is superimposing that as THE way to learn

B) He disregards Heisig on a point that's half made-up; "it makes you learn like the chinese do and it gives unusual meanings hurf-durf". Sure, that's true in a way. But that's not really the POINT, the main thing about Heisig is getting a cohesive, logical system to learn all the kanji; basically doing the same as the recommended "gather a bunch of kinda-alike kanji and learn them together" but for the WHOLE system of jouyo kanji. Which isn't for everyone. Of course not. But hey guess what, it's effective for a lot of people who wouldn't even be able to get started on the method mentioned here/don't have the time and means for it/are just good at that kind of learning. Moreover, it's as fun as you make it; there's a good, well-grounded community at kanji.koohii.com that fixes pretty much all the weak points of Heisig and it's a creative process.

Besides, what kind of japanese student are you if you are well-versed in them internets and haven't visited alljapaneseallthetime.com ?

Seriously, there's some good advice here. But it's way too character-specific to be able to say everyone should do this. And this 'hate' towards Heisig is childish and ridiculous - what the hell's the point of hating a method of learning? If the means work, they work. There's no reason to hate on them. Just throw up some more tools and maybe people use them fine.

It's not like anyone's being forced to learn Heisig. We just do it because it works. If it doesn't suit you, fine. But don't go preaching hate towards something that a lot of people have very good use of. Say that 'hey there's this Heisig trend but there ARE other methods' if you want. But more than that won't help anyone.
