I lived in Okinawa, Japan for almost 10 years and the difficulty I encountered while studying Japanese was getting Japanese people to speak Japanese to me, rather than English.  Even if my Japanese was better than their English, most Japanese preferred to speak English.

Did you encounter this problem and if so how did you overcome it?</description>
